Lauderdale, FL was third, for a 59-pound yellowfin tuna. Brett Goldberg of Westlake Village got a 32.6-pound wahoo. Ace Neely of Lancaster caught a 27-pound dorado.

Frank Olachia of Westminster won first place and the high roller jackpot for the best fish not caught on the kite. He got a 66.2-pound yellowfin with a sardine on a 2/0 Gorilla hook and 40-pound Izorline. He said he used a Pro Gear Yellowtail Special reel and a Calstar custom 765 L rod wrapped by The Rusty Hook. Store owner and chartermaster Alex Masumoto did the award honors. Way to go Frank!!

Eleven-year-old Bryan Kitahara of Placentia won first place and the trolling jackpot. He got a 63.6-pound yellowfin on a sardine, a 2/0 ringed Super Mutu hook and 40-pound clear Izorline to take the top spot. He used a TLD 20 reel and a Calstar 765 L rod. Bryan won the trolling jackpot for a 39.3-pound albacore. He goes to Brookhaven Elementary School, and got his dad Terry to help him display the fish.

The big news was the 148.2-pound yellowfin tuna caught by Shaun Maruyama of Los Altos, on a flying fish and a 6/0 Hayabusa hook, 50-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 60-pound Line One Spectra backing on a Tiagra 12 reel and a seven-foot Calstar rod. That fish will now stand as the best yellowfin caught so far this season, and it won first place in the jackpot for Shaun.
